Chlorine is my perfume. ~Author Unknown
Today was another of my "brick" workouts. A "brick" workout is when I go from one activity to the next without a break in between. This will help me with the triathlons that I will be racing in this summer. My first workout was a 1200 yard swim. It was an easy swim, but still, it was 1200 yards and it was within days of running 17.5 miles on Saturday plus a 1200 yard swim and a 6 mile run on Sunday. Coach didn't update my calendar until sometime on Sunday, so secretly I was hoping Monday was going to be a day off. No such luck. Today was a mental day to get through the workout. Surprisingly the swim felt really good on the legs. I have been working on my stroke and took advantage of the opportunity to concentrate on form. Still need to drop some strokes but small steps lead to a big victory. Every swim day is a chance to get better. Halfway into my swim I was happy that I was working out and not having a day off.
As soon as I completed my 48 lengths, I jumped out of the pool and headed to the lockers to change into my running clothes. Part two of my workout was about to begin. An easy 4 mile run at an 8:30 pace. The start of my run felt great. The only thing that was weird was that I still smelled like I was in the pool. I heard the guy on the treadmill next to me sniffing his nose like he was trying to see what the smell was. Yes. It's me and yes, chlorine is my new perfume. I have gotten so use to the smell that I hardly notice it anymore. I was surprised at how easy the run was. I thought that I would have been more exhausted but my pace was only 8:30 so maybe I would have felt different if I was pushing myself harder. Nonetheless, my run came to an end and I was ready to head home and get ready for a lunch date with a friend.
Today's lunch date was as much as a part of my workouts as the physical activities. I have a bad habit of keeping things inside. There are very few people that I share personal information with. I consider myself a very private person, so health, family and personal issues are rarely discussed with anyone outside of my spouse. I was very independent growing up and learned at an early age to rely on myself to get things done. To this day, it s very hard for me to open up to anyone on issues which affect me and that are near and dear to my heart. Today I was able to break bread with a friend and share something that has been on my mind. It felt so good to talk to her about it. A real sense of relief. She is someone that I trust and whose opinion I value. Today's lunch was a great mental workout and I really needed to do this. Thank you Anne for your friendship. For being there for me and for showing me that I can trust you. You are a very special person in my life and I am very grateful that we are friends.
