When the world says, “Give up,” Hope whispers, “Try it one more time.” - Author Unknown |
I am not sure what happened today. Last night when I spoke with my coach I was so focussed and energized about the workout that I had scheduled for today. If I could have gone out and run it right when my conversation was done, I would have. We discussed so many positive things, that I couldn't help but think that I had the running world in my hands and I was ready to conquor anything. I couldn't' wait to get to bed so I could get up and run my workout. I thought about something that a friend of mine said when you are excited about something the next day. She told me, "sleep fast". I fell asleep with a smile on my face and a plan of action running through my head.
Thursday is a track workout but since John was out of town, I was going to have to run later and on my own. Still, I was confident with the workout that I had before me and after dropping my son off, I was ready to roll. I was hoping to do my track workout at the local high school but I couldn't get on the track. So, I headed to the courts. I had a 2 mile warm-up so I ran that outside. The weather was beautiful and I didn't want to spend any more time that I had to on the treadmill. I think I am still having nightmares from the 17.5 mile run on it last week. Anyway, the 2 mile warm up was good. Kept the heart rate low in the 130s. Ran slow to save energy for the workout. Got back to the courts and changed into some lighter running clothes. Went upstairs and successfully snagged the last open treadmill. Now, all I had to do was complete the workout and I would be golden.
Today's workout. 9.5 miles
Ok, I can do this.
Started the workout and the first 2 6 min runs were ok. I was happy to have the 2 minute EZ in-between the hard running. Then, I started my third 6 min. run. I was good for 4 of the 6 minutes. Don't know what happened but I couldn't keep my legs going. So, I slowed down a bit and worked in to the 4th set of 6 min runs. Same thing, I got to 4 minutes than had to retreat onto a slower pace and finish in the EZ mode. I didn't want to give up and thought that maybe the energy I had saved by running at a slower pace would help me complete my 5th set. I started the 5th set and when I couldn't get past the 7:20 pace had to slow down. Aaaaargh. This was so frustrating.
I sucked it up and finished my workout with a 2 mile cool down. I am not sure what happened or why I was unable to get my legs to move faster than a 7:20 mile. All I knew at that moment was that I was dripping with sweat, exhausted and disappointed in my workout. I still had a core workout to go, so I needed to gather my thoughts and finish what I came to do.
Even though today's workout was disappointing, this was the first time, I didn't let it get me down. Instead, I focussed on what I was able to accomplish and used this as a building block for the next workout. In fact I asked my coach to schedule this same workout for me in the future so I could complete it as it was supposed to be done. I am not going to let this workout win. I will comeback stronger and will run the miles as it is written and come out victorious. Confession-
A 2 hour nap in the afternoon also helped me move past this ugly workout.
Don't look now "6 min track workout", I'm coming back to take you down.
Completed Mileage 7.5 miles
30 min core workout.
