It was nice having Saturday off but I was dreading two things that were going to affect my long run on Sunday; the dinner choice (which I didn't get a choice of) and the amount of sleep I was going to be able to enjoy. I tried to cargo load on Saturday and get to sleep early, but compared to regular long run days, I failed miserably in this area. I was hoping that the last minute pasta I shoved into my system was going to help me on my run.
Once again, I had to start my run early, early in the morning. This is a very busy time of year with my business and I am starting to get torn between working out and just plain working. Anyway, the alarm was set for 3:45 and I was out the door and running by 4:20 in the morning. Once again, I felt like the town crier as I ran up and down the street from my house to the path logging my miles. Thankfully I was meeting up with Amy at 5:30 and I already had close to 8 miles under my belt. The weather was warm. especially for this time of year, but I had my fluids and gel with me as I need to start prepping my body for the 26 mile long run. I was feeling fine and strong at this point. Aside from a lack of sleep, my mind was focussed on the task at hand and I was forging ahead. By the time Amy and I had finished our run, I had completed 13 miles. Thanks so much Amy for meeting up with me. I really enjoyed our chat and the miles flew by. So grateful you could help me out!
When we got back to the gazebo, we ran into John T. Perfect timing as he was just starting his 4 mile run and I had a total of 5 miles left to go. So, John and I headed out East for 2 and back. At this point, my body was starting to feel fatigued. My legs were wishing they were laying in bed and my energy level even with the gatorade and gu was running low...VERY LOW. Somewhere around mile 14 or just past it, I felt a muscle twinge in my right hamstring. It was just enough to let me know that the last 4 miles were not going to be pretty. At this point all I wanted to do was make it home without hurting it any more. Although this is not what I want to have happen, I am glad that I still have some time to recover before the race.
I got home and chugged about 30 oz of water. I immediately rolled my leg, showered and put on my compression socks. How my leg was going to react for tomorrow was going to be another story. I have learned over the years that this is a sign of fatigue or overuse. I need to keep a positive attitude and focus on it healing so I can be out running again soon. Come on legs, don't fail me now!
Total miles planned: 18.
