March 19 Beans..Beans...Beans **** Boston 2012 ****

Monday was a day of rest and recovery for me.  No swimming, no running, no biking.  Just trying to rest my hamstring and hope that I am running soon.

Since I was sitting on the sidelines, I decided that it would be a great day time to take my dog for a walk along the creek.  My dog, "Beans", short for Beantown a.k.a Boston, is still a puppy. She is 1 1/2 years old and has the strength of an ox.  I've been experimenting with leashes and harnesses, trying to find one that will restrain her and yet provide a fun walking experience for me.  With each day she is getting better.  I just need to remind myself that she is a child,  I mean a puppy and that she will want to run, and pull and scamper and eat sticks and a million other things she finds along the way.  Sometimes I don't want to know what she is chewing on.

When we got her we intended to take her to puppy kindergarten.  Well, that never happened.  Then I read on the internet about training her; that didn't work too good either.  Since I work out of my house, I spend the most time with the dog, so I guess the training, walking and feeding responsibilities fell into my lap.  Don't get me wrong, she is a beautiful dog and very loyal, I just always thought that Ian would be my last child to raise.  The strangest thing about the dog is that she doesn't bark.  Thats right.  the only time that she likes to bark is when we have the hairdryer going.  Weird huh?

So, since Beans needed some sniffing time, I decided to take her into the wooded area on the other side of the creek.  I called a friend who also has a lab puppy and we went out together.  After the two dogs got all their personal sniffing out of their system, I was able to let Beans off her leash and run free.  It is a clear open area so there wasn't any chance of us running into someone without seeing them first.  Beans was having a great time running up and down the trail and acting silly.  Then she disappeared for awhile.  Uh, oh.  That is not going to be good.  Last time she went running up and down the sides of the creek she was chasing geese.  This time however, I didn't see any birds flying crazy so she must have gotten into something else.  We kept walking on the wooded trail and I figured that sooner or later she would answer my call and come running.  And, that was exactly what she did.  Beans came flying out from behind this big wooden log.  And, yep, she did it again.  Beans found the last mud hole that was on the trail.  And, true to her puppy ways, she had to get in it.  I couldn't help but laugh and enjoy the moment.  She definitely has the face that only a mother could love.

Oh Beans, you do such a good job of making me laugh just when I need it most.  Thank goodness for man's best friend.  You are one amazing and funny dog!
