March 8 ***Lesson Learned*** Boston Marathon 2012

Took my husband's advice and slept in  to 5 a.m. today. It seems that my head is hitting the pillow sooner and my alarm keeps going off earlier and earlier.  Sleeping in to 5 was a good idea.  Admittedly, I was a bit apprehensive about my workout this morning.  I wasn't sure if I wanted to run it on the track outside or on the path.  The distance was an 800 or half mile.  Since I was going to be working on pace, I wanted the path to be clear of traffic.  Decisions, decisions, decisions.

While I was getting dressed I decided I would do my workout on the path.  If I started at Spring Road and ran around the corner at York, I would be at the half mile mark.  First part of the workout was 1.5 mile warm-up.  My legs felt good  and aside from jumping some puddles, the path was free and clear.

The workout today was going to take a lot of focus.  I needed to concentrate on pace and form if I was going to reach my goal.

Planned workout-Run Fast

Lined up to start my workout and within 3 minutes of my first 800, I knew I was in trouble.  I felt so good that I broke the cardinal rule of running...I went out too fast.  I tried to slow up, but failed.  800 after 800, I was not hitting my mark.  No matter how hard I tried, I was struggling.  And, this was the easy part.  The challenge was going to be at the end when I needed to run the last 3 faster than the first 7.  Oh boy, I was in trouble.  I struggled to finish the workout and tried to redeem myself with the last three.  Based on my earlier runs, I was going to need some rocket boosters on my shoes to reach my goal.  Fail, fail, fail.

I guess if I have to learn this lesson, I would rather face it now, than in a race.  This was a great reality check for me and something that I really need to pay attention to.  Still working on my pace.  Oh, Lord, will I ever become consistent in this area?
