March 14 ***NEW To NEWton*** --**Boston 2012**

NEW TO NEWTON

So what is all the buzz surrounding "Newton"?  The last time I remember this topic coming up, it had something to do with gravity, an apple and a bad science grade that I got that semester.  Anyway, now that I am older and wiser, I have taken a new interest in "Newton".  Although, I am happy to report that I will not be graded on this subject and there isn't a term paper involved with this study.

The Newton I am speaking of is the running shoe.  The shoe was built with Action/Reaction technology which reduces impact, returns energy and propels you forward so you can run faster, farther, forever.  Sounded pretty good so I visited "The Runners Soul" and purchased a pair.  Newton offers a 30 day money back guarantee so what did I have to lose right?  I certainly wouldn't  incorporate them into my marathon training long runs, but they might proved interesting on some of the shorter less mileage days.

I have to admit that even when I tried them on on the store, they had a funny feel to them.  So, when I wore them this morning, I was expecting them to be a bit uncomfortable.  And, they were. For the first 1/2 mile, I felt like I was running in high heels.  Now, if you really know me, that would be a sight to see.  High heels and I don't get along too well.  I have always been a very casual person and fancy shoes with spikes were never my thing unless they were the latest softball spike by Nike.

Anyway, so by the time I got to the marker, my feet were starting to spread out and get comfy in my new sneaks.  I think I liked them.  I did feel a difference in my running however I think it will take quite a bit more mileage before I am sold on them.  I never thought of myself as a heel striker when I run, but maybe I am.  I will have to let the shoes and the miles speak for themselves.  More updates later.

Today's workout was an easy 4 miles.  A quickie some might say.  Pace was a 9:05.  It was so warm out this morning that I ran in my fancy Mizuno running capris and a light shirt.  I'm enjoying this weather but I am hoping for a cold spell for Boston.  I run my best races in the cold, so, a drop in temperature around race day would be wonderful.  Mother Nature, I hope you are reading this blog.  I got to the path just in time to run part of the way with "The Wolf Pack".  Saw Amy on my way back, Margi, Carol, Kurt, Nancy and a bunch of other famous Elmhurst runners.  Everyone was out running in the dark and enjoying the warm weather.  Is there anyone in this town that sleeps in anymore?

I was glad that the run was short because I still had a swim workout to do and I started the day running on fumes.  Had a lot of stuff going on in the house last night and hadn't eaten since lunch yesterday.  I was fatigued from the start of my run up to and through my swim.  I was trying to play catch up with food all day and I wasn't doing a great job of it.  Having a hard time quenching my thirst these days too, so I am hoping this will pass.

Met MAB at the pool today for my swim.  It was a good thing that I knew she was coming, because my drive today was not there.  My mind is focussed on some other things right now, and a 2300 yard swim workout was not on the list.  Nonetheless, I knew that I would be really mad at myself if I didn't push through the swim sets so I jumped in the water and started moving.   Mentally, this was a really hard workout.  Physically, it felt good to move in the water even if I was swimming at a turtle's pace.  (Wait, is a turtle fast in the water)?  Oh well, let's just say this was one of those days when I couldn't get moving.  I was happy when this was in the books.  Thank you so much MAB for meeting me at the pool.  I really appreciated you working out with me today!!  Today's poor performance will give me something else to add to my list of things I need to desperately work on.  And just when I needed it most, my Coach posts on Twitter her awesome swim workout.  I love to see that because it motivates me to want to get better at a sport that I struggle with.  Looking at someone else's workout performance makes me want to get stronger.  Thanks Coach for the inspiration!!!!
